Speech Outline

  1. Introduction
    1. Attention grabber – The opening line of your speech needs to grab the audience’s attention, or you risk your listeners tuning out. Since the purpose of your speech is to persuade the audience, you need to make sure they’re paying attention to your arguments. Feel free to experiment here. Here are some examples of ways you could open a speech about sleep:
      • Tell a personal anecdote about the importance of sleep in your own life. Have you ever suffered from insomnia? Did your life change dramatically once you started paying more attention to your sleeping habits?
      • Start with a joke: “Why did the man eat yeast and shoe polish before he went to bed? So he could rise and shine”.
      • Shock the audience with a statistic: “1 in 3 Аmericans don’t get the recommended amount of sleep.”
      • Engage the audience directly: “Raise your hand if you haven’t had a good night’s sleep in the last week.”
    2. Thesis – The thesis statement is used to inform the listeners of the topic of the speech and the specific argument the speaker will be making. For example:
      • No matter what excuses you may have, you should be prioritizing getting 7-9 hours a night for the sake of your physical and mental health, as well as your quality of life.
    3. Qualifications – The audience needs evidence of your legitimacy. Show the audience you’re a credible source of information by providing them with proof that you’re eligible to talk on the subject.
      • Are you a doctor or other medical professional with experience in the field of sleep?
      • Are you currently studying biology, medicine, or another subject that touches on the subject of sleep?
      • Do you have personal experience with insomnia and sleep deprivation or any other relevant personal experience?
      • Are you part of a volunteer group aiming to spread awareness on the subject?

      1. Studies show that sleeping less than seven hours a day results in a 13% increased risk of heart failure. (Evidence that supports your point.)

  4. A powerful ending is an essential part of any speech. This is where you tie all your points together cohesively, summing up your points for your audience. Your conclusion should consist of three parts:

    1. Summary: Here, briefly remind the listeners of the points you made and your thesis, restating why they should agree with your position.
      • High-quality sleep is good for your appearance, heart-health, and cognitive performance, while sleep deprivation can have dire consequences for all three. It’s crucial that you pay attention to your sleeping habits and get 7-9 hours of high-quality sleep every single night.
    2. Unique ending/ Audience challenge: End your speech with a powerful closing thought or recommend a course of action.
      • You don’t have to believe me; try it for yourself. Start tonight! Give yourself an extra hour of sleep, and stay off any screens for at least an hour beforehand. I can guarantee you’ll feel a change in your mood and performance the next morning.
      • There are plenty of apps that can help you fall asleep with sleep casts, soothing music, meditations, or white noise. Limit your notifications and distractions, and try to get at least 7-9 hours of sleep each night. We should be spending ⅓ of our lives sleeping, so start your healthy sleep habit today!
    3. Thank the audience for listening.
      • Thank you for your attention and for giving me the opportunity to make you think a little differently about sleep.
